DOMINIQUE TINJUST
THE QUEST FOR
UNDERSTANDING
THE BODY
PASSIONATE AND ENTHRALLING,
DOMINIQUE TINJUST IS NOT YOUR AVERAGE
WELLNESS INSTRUCTOR. WITH AN INSATIABLE
CURIOSITY, OUR PILATES COACH IS A JACKOF-ALL-TRADES WITH A REMARKABLE CV.
AT THE AGE OF 56 (THOUGH HE SEEMS 40),
HE CAN MAKE YOU FEEL AT EASE WITH HIS
SINCERE SMILE ALONE.
Upon meeting him, it’s hard
to imagine this peaceful
man in combat. And yet,
Dominique Tinjust is an elite
athlete, passionate about
martial arts. In addition
to participating in two Vo
Vietnam competitions, he
also performed with his
dance group in Réunion, his
native island. A jazz dance
graduate, he developed a
particular interest in African,
Caribbean, Cuban and
African-American dances
through his travels. “I wanted
to understand how a dance
movement could transform
in the different geographical
areas where it evolved,” says
Dominique Tinjust. His first
show on this theme, which
was called Itinéraires, marked
the beginning of this journey.
His hunger for knowledge led
him to undertake a master’s
degree in Contemporary
Dance at Paris-8 University.
“I wanted to do this master’s
degree to expand my field
of knowledge and be able
to defend my musical
and dance scopes,” says
Dominique Tinjust. At
the same time, frequent
physical problems pushed
him to explore parts of him
that he didn’t know much
about and which caused
his injuries. For him, “we
have a body, but we don’t
have the user guide.” It is by
looking for this user guide
that he discovered Pilates – a
method favoured by those
in performing arts who are
undergoing rehabilitation.
