06:30 A.M. IT IS NOT THE SHRILL SOUND OF YOUR ALARM, BUT THE
GENTLE RIPPLES OF THE WAVES THAT GREET YOU IN THE EARLY
MORNING. THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT THE SEA IS NEAR. A DREAM
PLACE FOR SEA LOVERS, THE DOMAINE DE BEL OMBRE IS IDEALLY
LOCATED ON THE SOUTHERN COAST OF MAURITIUS, WHERE THE
OCEAN’S TURQUOISE SHADES AND WILD GREEN LANDS BLEND IN
TOTAL HARMONY. IF “HOLIDAYS IN THE SUN” MEANS SUNBATHING
FOR SOME, MANY WOULD RATHER JUMP INTO THE WATER!
Pedal boats, canoeing and glass-bottom boat
trips are some regular family activities that
always bring their share of fun. However,
the diversity of water sports on offer is an
invitation to experience new thrills. There
is an activity for each hour of the day!
At dawn, the quiet lagoon is perfect for
paddleboarding. Under the surface of the
calm and translucent water, sand-coloured
fish can be spotted. For those who seek
in-depth relaxation, the morning silence
is ideal for promising paddle yoga and
meditation sessions. Later on, when the
wind comes up, the South becomes the
paradise of kite- and wind-surfers! It is no
secret: with steady trade winds and perfect
waves, Mauritius is one the world’s best kite
surf spots. No wonder that the KiteGlobing
School has settled at the heart of the
Domaine de Bel Ombre – more precisely at
the C Beach Club.
The most popular kite surf style is the
“freeride”, but you may also want to try
the “freestyle” (jumps and stunts) or the
“waveriding” (or “surfkite”), which is a
combination of surf and kite. “Wakestyle”
(when tricks are performed with a low
wing) and long distances are often favoured
by the more adventurous riders. Our
only advice: follow the safety rules and
be patient. “Nobody can try kite surf by
themselves”, says Kathrin, KiteGlobing’s
manager.
“You first need to be guided, to understand the
wind and master the technique…” Risk-takers
are warned! After spending a day chasing
the wind along a spectacular coastline,
euphoric kite-surfers love to gather around
a Phoenix* beer to share their experiences
and compare their sunburns. “Nissa net!”**,
as Mauritians would put it!
*a local beer brand - **so much fun!
